Glaucoma evaluation and management in Phoenix

Glaucoma Evaluation & Management in Phoenix, AZ

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to elevated eye pressure, and can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated. Most people with glaucoma notice no symptoms until real damage has already occurred, which is why regular screening matters.

Needed to get checked out because my eye was feeling very strained and has been bothering me and they all had great customer service and had me laughing too. Highly recommend this place! Especially for a first timer they were great! They kept in consideration the cost with insurance to make sure you knew exactly what to expect and never pressured you to pick anything but made you feel comfortable making a right decision and be happy with the look once you leave. Angelica helped fit glasses for me and knew first choice what looked best but still had me try others to make sure it was the right choice. She was very sweet and funny, she even had my daughter help us pick the pair because she knew she’d be honest on which one really looked good. They were awesome quick and caring!

I was having trouble with my frames and seeing clearly with the glasses that were given to me previously. Dr. Clanton took the time to exam my eyes and make sure to get my prescription right. Also, the gal (sorry, I can't remember her name but she was the manager) that looked at my current glasses and checked the current prescription was excellent! She explained everything in detail and made sure the replacement was more than satisfactory. This office has new staff and I couldn't have asked for a better team. I am so happy with them that I will continue going to them. I highly recommend them.

I had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The staff was incredibly friendly, empathetic, and made me feel comfortable and safe throughout the entire appointment. The process was quick and efficient, and I truly appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. The pricing felt very reasonable given the quality of the frames and lenses. While other providers may offer lower prices, the craftsmanship and service here more than justify the cost. I was able to purchase both a pair of computer glasses and a regular everyday pair with the transition lens upgrade—all at a fair price. The service was exceptional, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for high-quality eyewear, excellent customer care, and a smooth, hassle-free experience.

Who Needs a Glaucoma Evaluation

Glaucoma risk increases with age, so we recommend regular screenings for adults over 40, and earlier or more frequent screening for patients with a family history of glaucoma, high eye pressure, or certain medical conditions like diabetes. Because glaucoma is often symptomless in its early stages, routine screening is the only reliable way to catch it in time.

Common Symptoms to Watch For

  • Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision, often unnoticed at first
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Eye pain or pressure, in more advanced or acute cases
  • Blurred vision
  • Redness in the eye
  • No symptoms at all — this is the most common presentation early on

What Happens During the Appointment

Your evaluation includes measuring your eye pressure, examining your optic nerve for signs of damage, and testing your peripheral vision. If glaucoma is diagnosed, we’ll walk you through a management plan, which may include prescription eye drops, regular monitoring visits, or referral for further treatment, and explain what to expect going forward.

Why Northern Avenue Eye Care

Glaucoma is a lifelong condition to manage, not a one-time diagnosis, and Dr. Robert Clanton’s decades of experience mean you have a steady, knowledgeable partner for that journey. As an independent practice, we prioritize consistent, unhurried monitoring so changes get caught quickly and your treatment stays on track. We’re currently accepting new patients.

Insurance

We accept most major vision and medical insurance plans. If you don’t see your plan listed or aren’t sure what’s covered, call us at (602) 995-8848 and we’ll check your benefits for you before your visit.

FAQS here

Can glaucoma be cured?

There’s currently no cure for glaucoma, but with early detection and consistent treatment, its progression can often be slowed or stopped, preserving your remaining vision.

How often should I be screened for glaucoma?

We generally recommend screening at every comprehensive eye exam for adults over 40, with more frequent monitoring if you’re diagnosed or at higher risk.

Is glaucoma hereditary?

Family history is one of the biggest risk factors for glaucoma, so let us know if a parent or sibling has been diagnosed.

What does glaucoma treatment usually involve?

Treatment often starts with prescription eye drops to lower eye pressure, along with regular monitoring visits. Some cases may require additional procedures.

Can I still lose vision even if I’m being treated?

Treatment is aimed at slowing or stopping further damage. Vision already lost to glaucoma typically can’t be restored, which is why early detection is so important.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major vision and medical insurance plans. Call us at (602) 995-8848 and we’ll confirm your coverage before your visit.
