Needed to get checked out because my eye was feeling very strained and has been bothering me and they all had great customer service and had me laughing too. Highly recommend this place! Especially for a first timer they were great! They kept in consideration the cost with insurance to make sure you knew exactly what to expect and never pressured you to pick anything but made you feel comfortable making a right decision and be happy with the look once you leave. Angelica helped fit glasses for me and knew first choice what looked best but still had me try others to make sure it was the right choice. She was very sweet and funny, she even had my daughter help us pick the pair because she knew she’d be honest on which one really looked good. They were awesome quick and caring!

I was having trouble with my frames and seeing clearly with the glasses that were given to me previously. Dr. Clanton took the time to exam my eyes and make sure to get my prescription right. Also, the gal (sorry, I can't remember her name but she was the manager) that looked at my current glasses and checked the current prescription was excellent! She explained everything in detail and made sure the replacement was more than satisfactory. This office has new staff and I couldn't have asked for a better team. I am so happy with them that I will continue going to them. I highly recommend them.

I had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The staff was incredibly friendly, empathetic, and made me feel comfortable and safe throughout the entire appointment. The process was quick and efficient, and I truly appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. The pricing felt very reasonable given the quality of the frames and lenses. While other providers may offer lower prices, the craftsmanship and service here more than justify the cost. I was able to purchase both a pair of computer glasses and a regular everyday pair with the transition lens upgrade—all at a fair price. The service was exceptional, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for high-quality eyewear, excellent customer care, and a smooth, hassle-free experience.

Who Needs a Diabetic Eye Exam

Anyone diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should have a dilated diabetic eye exam at least once a year, even if your vision seems perfectly normal. Patients with a longer history of diabetes, poorly controlled blood sugar, or existing retinopathy may need to be seen more frequently.

Common Symptoms to Watch For

  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Dark spots or “floaters” in your field of vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Colors appearing faded or washed out
  • Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes
  • No symptoms at all — many diabetic eye changes are silent in early stages

What Happens During the Appointment

We’ll ask about your diabetes history, including how long you’ve been diagnosed and how your blood sugar has been managed. Your exam includes a comprehensive vision check along with dilation, which allows us to clearly view the retina and optic nerve for any signs of damage. If we find changes, we’ll explain what they mean, recommend a treatment or monitoring plan, and coordinate with your physician as needed.

Why Northern Avenue Eye Care

Dr. Robert Clanton has extensive experience with diabetic eye care and understands how closely eye health and overall health are connected. As an independent practice, we take the time to explain findings clearly and work as part of your broader care team, not just a single appointment on your calendar. We’re currently accepting new patients.

Insurance

We accept most major vision and medical insurance plans. If you don’t see your plan listed or aren’t sure what’s covered, call us at (602) 995-8848 and we’ll check your benefits for you before your visit.

FAQS here

How often should diabetics have their eyes examined?

At least once a year, even without symptoms. Your doctor may recommend more frequent exams if retinopathy or other changes are already present.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels in the retina caused by fluctuating blood sugar over time. Left unmanaged, it can lead to vision loss, which is why regular exams matter.

Can I have diabetic eye problems without knowing it?

Yes. Many diabetic eye changes cause no symptoms in their early stages, which is exactly why annual dilated exams are recommended even when your vision feels normal.

Will my eyes be dilated during a diabetic eye exam?

Yes, dilation is a standard part of diabetic eye exams because it allows us to fully examine the retina and detect early changes.

Can diabetes affect my vision even if my blood sugar is well controlled?

It’s less likely, but still possible. Well-managed blood sugar significantly lowers your risk, which is why annual exams remain important regardless.

Is diabetic retinopathy reversible?

Early changes can often be managed or slowed with treatment and blood sugar control, which is why catching it early makes a real difference.

Do you communicate with my primary care doctor or endocrinologist?

Yes, we’re glad to coordinate with your broader care team to help manage your diabetes and protect your vision together.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major vision and medical insurance plans. Call us at (602) 995-8848 and we’ll confirm your coverage before your visit.
