Needed to get checked out because my eye was feeling very strained and has been bothering me and they all had great customer service and had me laughing too. Highly recommend this place! Especially for a first timer they were great! They kept in consideration the cost with insurance to make sure you knew exactly what to expect and never pressured you to pick anything but made you feel comfortable making a right decision and be happy with the look once you leave. Angelica helped fit glasses for me and knew first choice what looked best but still had me try others to make sure it was the right choice. She was very sweet and funny, she even had my daughter help us pick the pair because she knew she’d be honest on which one really looked good. They were awesome quick and caring!

I was having trouble with my frames and seeing clearly with the glasses that were given to me previously. Dr. Clanton took the time to exam my eyes and make sure to get my prescription right. Also, the gal (sorry, I can't remember her name but she was the manager) that looked at my current glasses and checked the current prescription was excellent! She explained everything in detail and made sure the replacement was more than satisfactory. This office has new staff and I couldn't have asked for a better team. I am so happy with them that I will continue going to them. I highly recommend them.

I had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The staff was incredibly friendly, empathetic, and made me feel comfortable and safe throughout the entire appointment. The process was quick and efficient, and I truly appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. The pricing felt very reasonable given the quality of the frames and lenses. While other providers may offer lower prices, the craftsmanship and service here more than justify the cost. I was able to purchase both a pair of computer glasses and a regular everyday pair with the transition lens upgrade—all at a fair price. The service was exceptional, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for high-quality eyewear, excellent customer care, and a smooth, hassle-free experience.

Regular Exam or Medical Eye Care?

Schedule a routine eye exam if you just need a vision check, a new prescription, or it’s simply time for your annual visit. Schedule medical eye care if you already have a diagnosed eye condition, you’re having eye pain, redness, or unusual symptoms, or you need pre- or post-operative care around eye surgery. If something feels urgent, call us directly at (602) 995-8848 rather than waiting.

Who Needs Medical Eye Care

Patients with an existing eye disease or condition, those experiencing new or unusual eye symptoms, and anyone preparing for or recovering from eye surgery, such as cataract surgery, can benefit from medical eye care. It’s also appropriate for patients with health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that carry known risks to eye health.

Common Symptoms and Situations

  • Ongoing eye pain, redness, or irritation
  • A diagnosed condition like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy needing regular management
  • Upcoming or recent cataract surgery requiring pre- or post-operative care
  • Sudden vision changes or unusual visual disturbances
  • Family or personal history of eye disease
  • A referral from your primary care physician for an eye-related concern

What Happens During the Appointment

We’ll start with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history, and any related diagnoses. Depending on your situation, your visit may include specialized testing to evaluate the specific condition being managed, whether that’s eye pressure checks for glaucoma, retinal imaging for diabetic eye disease, or a pre-operative assessment ahead of cataract surgery. We’ll explain your diagnosis and treatment plan clearly and coordinate with your other physicians as needed.

Why Northern Avenue Eye Care

Dr. Robert Clanton has provided medical eye care since 1994, with specific experience in glaucoma management, diabetic eye exams, and pre- and post-operative cataract care. As an independent practice, we’re able to give complex or ongoing conditions the attention and continuity they need, rather than treating every visit like a first appointment. We’re currently accepting new patients.

Insurance

Medical eye care visits are often billed through medical insurance rather than vision insurance. If you’re not sure what’s covered, call us at (602) 995-8848 and we’ll check your benefits for you before your visit.

FAQS here

What’s the difference between medical eye care and a routine eye exam?

A routine exam focuses on your vision and prescription. Medical eye care focuses on diagnosing and managing eye diseases and conditions, often on an ongoing basis.

When should I schedule a regular eye exam instead?

If you just need a vision check, an updated prescription, or it’s been a year or two since your last visit, a routine eye exam is the right choice.

When should I schedule medical eye care instead?

If you have a diagnosed eye condition, new or worsening symptoms like pain or redness, or need care around eye surgery, medical eye care is the right visit type. Call us if you’re not sure which applies.

Do you provide pre- and post-operative care for cataract surgery?

Yes, we provide both pre-operative evaluations and post-operative follow-up care for cataract surgery patients.

Will my medical insurance cover these visits?

Medical eye care visits are often billed through medical insurance rather than vision insurance. Our team can help you understand your coverage.

Do I need a referral to be seen for medical eye care?

Not always, though we’re happy to work with referrals from your primary care physician or other specialists when applicable.

Can you manage an eye condition alongside my other doctors?

Yes, we regularly coordinate care with primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and other specialists to support your overall health.
